ORBITAL OUTFITTERS; SPACE TECH and HOLLYWOOD DESIGN

What will the well dressed space tourists be wearing when the first space excursions blast off for a trip to space? At the Spacecraft Technology Expo Orbital Outfitters gave us a preview of their latest fashions.

If you are like the rest of the people who are busy booking flights at $100,000 plus a trip I am sure you are wondering what to wear out there. Well the folks at Orbital Outfitters are working day and night to answer that question.  They are not only designing their space suits to be practical but to have a bit of style as well. Their chief designer is Chris Gilman the founder of Global Effects Inc. Global Effect founded in 1986, is one of the best known and reputable special effects companies in Hollywood. They make and design many costumes and special effects apparatus for  films and he brings this sense of art to what is a by necessity a very practical no nonsense profession of engineers and scientists.

One of the innovations that is incorporated in the design of their latest suit design is the helmet for their Industrial Suborbital Spacesuit (IS3) What you may ask is this innovation? The curvature of the visor design, allows greater viewing visibility which will come in handy when you are craning your neck to view for the first time the curvature of the earth from space through the window of your spacecraft.

Now how much would you pay? But wait! There’s more. The truly outstanding thing about this suit that sets it apart from other suits getting ready for our new life in space is that if something goes wrong out there with your spacecraft, God forbid. you can maintain optimum pressure in the event that there is any loss of cabin pressure while you are taking pictures and checking out the view.

But what if your spacecraft cannot, I repeat cannot for one reason or another re-enter the earths atmosphere. Then what is a space cadet to do? Well at Orbital Outfitters they are working on a plan. It is called Project: SpaceDiver

During the course of the project, their first objective is to break the worlds Skydiving altitude record. Then they will keep going till they end up with a system that works even as far out as near earth orbit.

bail out and re-enter earths atmosphere in the suit alone. That is correct. No spacecraft needed.

No this is no movie. This is real life. If you don’t believe me just ask Texas A&M and  NASA. Orbital Outfitters is currently under  contract doing spacesuit development design work for the planned Mars and Lunar manned missions. Remember these are the guys who are also working with XCOR on the suits for their manned flights. So save up your money cause you can book a flight on XCOR in about 5 to 7 years. Right around the corner.

ASC 3D LASER CAMERA; THE POWER OF A PULSE

Quantum POP caught up with Advanced Scientific Concepts (ASC) during the Spacecraft Technology Expo 2012 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. The ASC TIGEREYE 3D FLASH LIDAR fires a laser pulse so packed with info you have to slow it down to fit it on your computer. It takes individual 3D images at variable speeds, which can be viewed as video or as snapshots. It can run at current video speed 29.97 frames a second or in this case pulses a second. For use in outer space it is only required  to shoot at 1 to 2 pulses a second when used for docking..

Most customers are satisfied with 12 frames or less because the faster the speed the pulse the more data that must be stored on your computer when only a little data is needed. Each pulse fired from the camera returns the image back to the camera lens. Using the equation for the speed of light the camera can calculate and measure the depth of the object and its distance to the camera. You can tell how fast objects are moving. The height and width of objects. The distance of each object form each other. All within an inch or two.

Now the really great part is that it can take a picture that it shoots and present a 360 degree view of the event. Which can be rotated left to right top to bottom and desired as in the pictures from this football game. All from one single camera one single laser.

The only limitation is of course that from the angle from the opposite side of where the camera was positioned, you could see the angle of the players arms and legs in the shot but you can’t see every detail of the players uniform, the numbers for instance. The back tends to flatten out where as the front detail is more pronounced. Still all in all that is a lot of data that is registered in one pulse of light.

Another feature of the ASC technology is, you can combine one 3D laser shot with 2D pictures all around an object or area of objects, to creat a complete 3D model in any kind of exploded view you want to see. You can also superimpose the color from your 2D pictures to set the color on your 3D 360 degree model. The human eye is more programmed to be interested in color than in shape.

The camera has a protective shell for rugged use but it can travel without the shell even into space as long as it is mounted properly. They will be going on the SpaceX flights to the ISS to help with docking procedures.

The ASC 3D camera can capture an object moving extremely fast and slow it down to a crawl. An airplane propeller for instance revolving at 20 times a second can be slowed down to see each individual rotation of the blades.

VIDEO: CLICK THE PICTURE

The objects in one frame of picture can be zoomed in for a close up even if they are ½ a mile away. One could for instance, shoot the takeoff of a plane from one end of the runway to the beginning of the runway and the plane and any other object in the frame from beginning to end of takeoff can be zoomed into and magnified for detailed viewing.

At $150,000 to$200,000 a camera, the applications are currently for strictly industrial and highly specialized technical use. ASC envisions consumer applications on the horizon. They are not ready to announce any consumer applications as of yet but Quantum POP sees a use immediately in security applications for both home and business. We also imagine that some form of this technology is used in the new Google self driving car now being tested in the US.

ELECTRIC CARS; EVERYONE’S PUSHING BUT WILL THEY GO FAR AND FAST ENOUGH?

During the Electric Vehicle Show EVS26 at the Los Angeles Convention Center all the big car names and even ones that you haven’t heard of were showing off designs and concepts.

Here are some of the many participants at EVS26

BMW

There seems to be no shortage of companies who see electric cars as a vehicle for promotion of their brand but are the sales contributing to the bottom line?

MERCEDES

They seem ready to sell but are the people interested in buying?

REMY

Some are wondering; will the needed break throughs in lithium battery capacity or an alternative battery system, needed to make the car competitive arrive before hydrogen systems become the carbon replacement.

DAIMLER

The electric  engine is more efficient in terms of fuel volume of input to volume of output than your best gas engine..

Just say charge it

But when the efficiency of the engine is applied to a mass scale in terms of converting a majority of car owners to electric, the efficiencies tend to become counter balanced with the infrastructure it takes to manage the whole conversion and maintain it.

HONDA

For instance electricity  production will have to be increased by a dramatic amount in order to accommodate the inevitable rise in use. Otherwise you have to ration it.  Most of the electricity in the US is coal produced. More would have to be added. If not the cost of electricity will go up. This would have a profound effect on the poor.

BATTERY

Then there is the little matter of disposing of the highly toxic lithium battery. They are difficult to recycle. Now it seems that some of them are wearing out faster than anticipated on some models.

At present the cost of gas must rise in order for electric cars to be marketable. Gas taxes and other fuel fees are proposed every year with the revenue going to subsidize electric car purchases and manufacturing. When fuel prices rise the cost of everything goes up. When prices rise the poor again are the hardest hit. Business suffers in general as well because folks don’t have as much to spend on stuff because it is more expensive and they have to get around.

The march to all electric might seem impossible with todays technology. If we all really want to go electric we will put a windmill on every roof and a lithium battery in every basement. Solar arrays will be everywhere and we will develop ways to recycle and dispose of all of the electric stuff just as green as can be. If the breakthrough occurs in technology, or windmills and solar panels start flying off the shelves from grassroots demand or the governments decide to force us to comply, the car companies want to stay current wth product ready to market. For the time being electric companies are willing to sell to the few as they keep showing off their prototypes and developing them as best they are able.  It is called positioning so that if the public does goes electric with their bad selves, cars companies can stay in the game.

LIBERTY SPACE BLASTS OFF

Liberty announces a new space delivery system business for human and cargo payloads

Liberty is the safest, most reliable, most economical commercial space transportation service ever developed. It includes the spacecraft, abort system, launch vehicle, and ground and mission operations.

Uniting some of the most knowledgable and experienced people in the space payload delivery systems game a new company announced its own payload delivery system to compete with SpaceX, Virgin Galactic and others in the field of space development and exploration

One of the impressive features of their design is that it is designed first for passenger use and secondly for cargo, both pressurized and non-pressurized. The new Liberty website says it this way; Liberty combines flight-proven elements designed from inception to meet NASA’s stringent human-rating requirements. This means that  anything will be able to fly safely and the standards are immediately high for this system.

The capacity and cost are the next great feature of the Liberty delivery capabilities. Largest payload capacity of any other commercial space company, 44,000 lbs and the ability to deliver it at a lower cost than others carriers. The first test flight will take place in 2014 with two  manned test flights for two crew members in 2015 from the Kennedy space center. which Many of the top people at Liberty have worked on shuttle missions from Kennedy and so they enjoy very  a detailed working knowledge of that facility.

Part of the strength of this company is their collective working experience acquired from thousands of hours of Space Shuttle and other NASA projects.

The Liberty system is a project developed by ATK and is a 3 stage rocket. The first stage is an Ares 1 engine and a second stage an  Ariane 5 rocket. The third stage built by ATK is the capsule made out of composite materials. Liberty has designed the capsule for 10 flights and then they will be discarded. If over the course of the missions however, it is found that the capsule is able of more use they will evaluate and schedule them as warranted. Liberty also would like to have 4 capsules in use at all times . Two docked for loading and unloading of cargo and passengers one in flight for arrival or tourists perhaps and one returning.

Liberty has not released a ticket price per passenger for low earth orbit excursions as of this date so save up your coin because when they do you will probably need over $100,000 easy.

STADIA EXPO; THE ART OF EVENT SPECTACLE

What does it take to create a stadium today? How much has stadium technology changed in the last ten years? What is being planned for the stadium of the future.? Has the stadium experience out lived its usefulness in todays modern world?

High tech plastics are the materials of choice for that touch of spectacle from Vector Foiltec

When we think of spectacle we think of many things. When Quantum POP uses spectacle in the context of this piece we mean the act of placing your physical body in a place where the venue itself is as much a part of the experience as the event taking place.

The modern outdoor and to a certain extent the indoor stadium is born of a design most referenced in the Roman Coliseum. . It offers an experience found in no other place. Where you can be absorbed in the immensity of the experience and take away from it a physical imprint to all of your senses.. It is something that everyone wants to do at least once in their life. Ideally from the point of view of those in the business of providing this unique form of entertainment, no matter how many times you do it will be an event. It has the potential to offer satisfaction available in no other place. That sensory satisfaction available nowhere else is what will get you to go and freeze your tukus at the stadium instead of staying at home in your comfy pajamas, pay $9 for a beer and fight the traffic to do it. For as little as $15 a seat on up to the stars you can have that spectacle experience in almost any major and minor urban area in the world.

This is how they do it in Germany on the drawing boards of gmp.architekten

The stuff that goes into the stadium design of today is much different from the designs of even 10 years ago and nothing like the designs of 20 years ago. New materials and considerations are involved. Comfort is becoming an important part of the experience. Roofs on your favorite ballpark are much more the norm and the technology that makes it practical is also designed to increase the spectacle.

The designs of companies like Vector Foiltec and others makes it possible to put state of the art roofs on what were once strictly outdoor stadiums like never before. Not only can such a sight be seen nowhere else they are also becoming practical in ways not possible before. It is now possible to construct spectacle roofs for sporting events using a poly and ethylene vinyl material that welcome not eliminate the suns rays to such an extent that natural grass can grow inside. Players love natural grass as most of the sports played in stadiums today were invented on natural turf. Natural turf decreases injuries and does not affect the play of the ball and performance of the players as the old artificial turf used to do.This is a relatively new feature of stadiums with roofs and is made possible with new materials and construction techniques.

But wait, do you think that you just go into your new metro stadium and plant some grass and hope that everything will work out fine.. Of course not. Today you need to have a grass turf system. This is especially important if you do not have a roof over your stadium.

Desso GrassMaster is a sports field of 100% natural grass reinforced with Desso synthetic grass fibres.

Desso Sports Systems now offers a natural sporting and outdoor concert turf concept that pays for itself by allowing stadium owner operators the ability to withstand torrential rains before the game or even the threat of an outdoor rock concert with tens of thousands of fans the day before a sporting event and still have optimum conditions for ball playing on the field the next day. Real grass and soil are involved along with layers for drainage and growth that are truly state of the art green.

In part 2 our our Stadia Expo Series we will explore more of the  companies and products  now and invisioned for the future of the Spectacle event business.

STADIUM TECH

Quantum POP will be at the STADIA Design and Technology Expo this week. Find out the kinds of tech that may appearing in a venue near you.

The Allianz Arena is a football stadium in the north of Munich, Germany

It is amazing what you take for granted at a stadium. Whenever you look at the luxury boxes for instance, you probably just assume that the designer haned the plans to the contractor and the contracter told some workers to build some windows and doors and put in some glass and days later they were boxes. But no! As it turns out they are all specially made in accordance with the latest tech and manufacturing innovations available. They are sold by manufacturers and designers to stadium owners all over the world. In fact you may even want to replace the ones you had installed 10 years ago because a manufacturer has improved the design.

It seems that you do not actually get a stadium kit when you decide to build or improve your local state of the art sporting and concert venue and whatever the latest stuff is goes into it. You go shopping  for everything from seats to sound systems.

Qi Zhong stadium in Shanghai

Companies from all over the world are going to be there. Incontrol Simulation Solutions will be on hand to sell their modling software for venues called Show Flow. analyzing and reccomending the positioning and location of bathrooms, exits, seating, backstge and in-house access points and so on. They make Enterprise Dynamics simulation modling software for airports and lots of other big footprint businesses.

Here is a product Discription from Crossfire maker of stadium quality audio and video systems; Click Effects CrossFire is the optimal multimedia broadcast                            server for unmatched quality and value in live event production.                            Simplicity, speed and an unprecedented feature set mark the power                            and value of CrossFire. CrossFire instantly serves video and audio clips, acts as a still store, a graphic generator with no rendering and a downstream keyer.

The Yas Marina Circuit is the venue for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

Techniquex is a flooring company with a special department just for stadiums. They do notheing but study foot trafic to see what holds uo over a long period of time and what falls apart when thousands of feet are walking. And you thought these guys just placed a big order at home depot.

So no matter what you though you know we are sure to know more after Quantum POP covers the Expo Monday through Wednes day of this week.

Earth Date 05.04.2012

Fracking and Halley’s Comet Meteor Shower on our radar.

First the big news that is easy to understand. Halley’s comet reminds us as few physical phenomenon can that in space, debris can be a star-dust memory. It is true. Halley’s comet takes 76 years to orbit the sun and that orbit is littered with star-dust. Every year we pass through Halley’s comet trail twice. That’s right , twice. The first time is tomorrow morning so young and old, rich and poor alike will want to see it. It will start at about 3am. The full moon will be a bit of a problem however it is setting most places at about 3:30am. So head up to the hills and put a mountain at your back with the moon well behind it. You will have a lot of dark sky to check it out. To find out when the moon will rise and set where you are, go to; http://www.usno.navy.mil/USNO/astronomical-applications/data-services/rs-one-year-us

So young people, you need to finish up at the bar, rave or party at about 1:30am or so according to how far you are away from a high mountain and bring your friends and lovers to finish up on a high note that will be so cool. I mean real cool so dress warm whatever you do or snuggle a great deal or both.

That goes double for you old star-gazers. Dress warm and do a lot of snuggling. Turn in even earlier early than you already do anyway the night before. Pack some food and head out at 2am or so. But no matter how old you are, if this isn’t something you do as a rule you will remember this morning forever, I promise. Check out the whole cosmic story at; http://www.astronomy.com/News-Observing/News/2012/05/Mays%20first%20meteor%20shower%20battles%20a%20Full%20Moon.aspx?utm_source=SilverpopMailing&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=ASY_NonSub_news_120504_final&utm_content=

Fracking

It is in the news once more. So what is that again exactly? If you guessed it is a nervous condition that affects environmentalists you are only part right. The other part is that it is beginning to infect investors as well. Not only that, it seems that according to who suffers from fracking the most, it is either going to affect the price you pay to stay warm or the quality of your friends and neighbor’s water supply and perhaps whether or not they are ravaged by earthquakes. YES! EARTHQUAKES.

American Rivers web site has an article on protecting rivers and streams from the potential hazards of fracking. Since no one wants to drink more chemicals than we already do in our drinking and recreational water and we all love fish, one way or the other this seems like a good idea. The EPA recently thought so in Pennsylvania. and ordered the fracking halted. The company did studies and the state and feds all did studies and found out that all the oil is below the water table there, where they were fracking and could only get into it, if it was from chemicals above ground. So it is the wastewater then that needs our attention. If vigilantly monitored, those chemicasl are easy to deal with. This will be part of the new rules EPA is now coming up with to govern fracking in the US.

Earthquakes seem even less worrisome. That is to say they cannot find any evidence that the tiny tremors caused by fracking are felt anywhere near enough to the fault lines for earthquakes to trigger anything but caution. It may be nothing more than another dot on the earthquake learning curve for scientists but since we do not even have the ability to predict earthquakes it seem to Quantum POP that prudence is not uncalled for when it comes to further monitoring of all fracking sites. so meanwhile, today we are glad to report, it still looks like the grand parents can afford to turn up the heat a bit when they get cold.

SCIENCE OF COLOR AND SHAPE

Electromagnetic energy reveals itself to us in the narrow band of radiation we call sight. However the way we see what we see, may have more in common with art and culture than science.

Our eyes allow us to perceive the radiation in electromagnetic spectrum within a small frequency range. That range is located in around the center point of the spectrum. Our peripheral perception of the spectrum has been improved with the invention of instruments capable of detecting, measuring, conducting and generating them. Everything we know in the spectrum has a name. You know these names, some very well.

The Electromagnetic Spectrum

Wave Type Wavelength (m) Frequency (Hz) Energy (J)
Radio waves > 0.1 < 3 x 109 < 2 x 10-24
Microwaves 10-3 – 0.1 3 x 109 – 3 x 1011 2 x 10-24 – 2 x 10-22
Terahertz waves 10-3 – 10-4 3 x 1011 – 3 x 1012 2 x 10-22 – 2 x 10-21
Infrared 7 x 10-7 – 10-3 3 x 1011 – 4 x 1014 2 x 10-22 – 3 x 10-19
Optical (visible light) 4 x 10-7 – 7 x 10-7 4 x 1014 – 7.5 x 1014 3 x 10-19 – 5 x 10-19
Ultraviolet 10-8 – 4 x 10-7 7.5 x 1014 – 3 x 1016 5 x 10-19 – 2 x 10-17
X-rays 10-11 – 10-8 3 x 1016 – 3 x 1019 2 x 10-17 – 2 x 10-14
Gamma rays < 10-11 > 3 x 1019 > 2 x 10-14

This is not art it is science. Therefore it seems logical that there should be a relationship scientifically between light, shape and color that is as immutable and inevitable, as turning on the radio, heating up some microwave popcorn and listening to the music. after seeing your chest X-Ray at the clinic.

Color,  is the way our eyes perceive the different frequencies of radiation from lower red to higher frequency violet  The summation of all radiation visible to the human eye appears as white. The absence of optical radiation perception is Black.

So far so good. Moving on. The frequency spectrum is really about voltage. Energy voltage, although for most applications, we calculate in wave cycles. From the time it takes a certain voltage of energy to initiate wave formation and complete. The measurement method most commonly used for this is metric. Sadly however metric has its limits when it comes to higher frequencies and we are forced to measure them in amounts of voltage to apply them to practical use. So it is logical to assume that color which is different frequencies would have an effect on us in some way that is calculable and produces similar results  within a constant framework. Right?

Well at times.

Color constants are few but firm. Red means red all of the time. Red always absorbs the most heat except for black of course.  Violet reflects heat the most. A room with reds and browns a bit of black will always feel warmer than a blue room, all things being equal. Another color constant is green. It is always going to feel fresh and spring like. Renewal abundance. Red will always be an environment which induces more passion more physicality prone to instability.  As you can see the color constants which are firmest have the most to do with the way these frequencies process energy in the form of heat. This process then has an effect on the way they make us feel when we see them. But what happens if one is subjected to cold passionless indifference whenever in a warm reddish colored room. Is there a period of time wherein a persons entire metabolism is altered when color is manipulated  through a forced experience.

Consider now if you will a certain frequency of radiation in the color spectrum we like to call;

Nice color eh. If you are a pink girl than this is your official color. If you are a guy you are thinking perhaps, the romance yes. Softness and sweetness is the color Baker Miller Pink, R:225, G:145, B:175, and HEX:FF91AF. Studies with this particular color have shown that when exposed to it most strong men get weaker, angry people become less aggressive and so on. However doing an experiment to attempt to prove this concept out as a constant is a bit more tricky

Here is what happened when they tried it out on prisoners in a real jail setting in the 70′s and 80′s.  Prisoners did respond and calmed down, as hoped, initially. Major goof: If they hung around too long, they became even more violent. Why would this occur? One reason perhaps is that pink is close to red and studies have shown that color does create passion and aggressiveness more than other colors. Or perhaps there were other considerations like the fact that it was a jail and a jail by any other color will still stink as bad.

Quick someone alert Sheriff Joe Arpio Tell him to get ready for a lockdown cause he has some guys that are gonna get angry any minute now.

Inn our next installment we will deal with the effect of shapes on people and the use of color and shape in no verbal communication.

2001 A SPACE ODYSSEY PT3; MARS AND BEYOND

This is part 3 of 2001 A SPACE ODYSSEY  old still 33 years to go.  Quantum POP analyzes Part 3 and 4  of the movie Jupiter and beyond and infinity. Topics include; Manned space travel beyond earth and moon, suspended animation, and artificial intelligence self-realization. BUT DON”T WORRY! It’ll be FUN.

Now in the movie we no sooner hear that ear-piercing signal being transmitted from our moon monolith to Jupiter, than we find ourselves on a mission to Jupiter to track it down and find out what it all means. No one tells you a whole lot in the movie 2001, so we don’t even know if mankind has been to Mars at all yet before we find ourselves off to Jupiter. But be that as it may, in terms of our story I mean think about it. I you found a monolith made by an intelligent self-aware species planted on your moon pointing a signal to one of Jupiter’s moons you would want to go there if you could. That kind of thing makes microbes on Mars look like Tinker Toys.

Now as far as we can see as of this earth date, we probably will not be sending anyone off to explore Jupiter’s moons any time soon. At the rate we are going it may not even be in another 33 years. The chances are much more likely we get to Mars in 33 years and if the Mars mission proponents have their way a lot sooner than that. When we do go to Jupiter though it will probably not be to land there but rather to visit some of Jupiter’s moons. And this planet has a lot of them. It even has provisional moons. It has moons that orbit its moons. The NASA page located here; http://solarsystem.nasa.gov/planets/profile.cfm?Object=Jupiter&Display=Sats on Jupiter’s moons lists 50 moons and 14 Provisional Moons.

Here are some Jupiter moon highlights. Four larger primary moons called the Galilean satellites. One of them Europa, may have life. Why? Because it has tons of water. More than earth even and there are some potentially volcanically warmed parts of water where again, potentially, life as we know it may exist. Another highlight we reprint from the NASA page as follows.

Three of the moons influence each other in an interesting way. Io is in a tug-of-war with Ganymede and Europa, and Europa’s orbital period (time to go around Jupiter once) is twice Io’s period, and Ganymede’s period is twice that of Europa. In other words, every time Ganymede goes around Jupiter once, Europa makes two orbits and Io makes four orbits. The moons all keep the same face towards Jupiter as they orbit, meaning that each moon turns once on its axis for every orbit around Jupiter.

Why is that? It almost sounds mechanical. Might be worth a look sometime.

The spaceship design that Stanley Kubrick thinks that we should have already built by now to go to Jupiter, sadly will not even be ready for production by the time we go to Mars.if we stick to the NASA plan as it is envisioned today.

The jupiter ship in the story is very long. It is constructed of modules connected together. Each module exists to fulfill the needs of each part of the mission. Food modules, science experiment and various instrument modules. In the story we are only concerned with the onboard earth to ship communications system module, a critical module indeed as we soon learn.

The spherical front of the space craft houses the crews quarters and the only place on board where there is any gravity.

The crew compartment spins of course like the wheel earlier in the movie creating that gravity.

The craft;s mission objectives, coordinates, ,functionality and data are all handled by the HAL-9000 computer who one learns is affectionately called Hal. Just when you think you can love him as only a human can love a computer, he glitches. The glitch occurs as a result of the mission objectives coming into conflict with a new mission directive that creates computational corrections in the overall computer program. You see, the mission was for the area of Jupiter to be explored with the humans in control and Hal there to assure all possible means of mission success. All possible means. The new directive however left out the humans on board when it came to knowledge of the monolith. Suddenly, contacting the species that created the monolith, became mission priority one. Hal is the only one on board who knows about the monolith. Even though the humans undoubtably want to find aliens since they are out of the loop they may be a liability to the mission without all the facts only Hal could process. So to Hal, mission success means Hal must not be disconnected.

Hal’s all-seeing eye reads the astronauts lips as they propose shutting him down if he is proven to be wrong about the communications module malfunctions Hal is predicting. The astronauts now in Hal’s twisted mechanical mind, become a possible impediment to the success of the mission. This then allows Kubrick and Clarke to introduce the concept of machine singularity. the singularity that Hal then embodies triggers the event horizon scenario long predicted in theoretical science circles. What does this mean? Here is a great explanation from the Singularity Institute. Event horizon: All social and technological progress thus far has come from human brains. When technology creates entirely new kinds of intelligence, this will cause the future to be stranger than we can imagine. So there is an’event horizon’ in the future beyond which our ability to predict the future rapidly breaks down. Well if you are a nube at this point and haven’t yet seen the movie all I can tell you is mayhem ensues. In the course of that mayhem there unfolds a great story ending of science fantasy that invites you to become a philosopher.

Some other science theory and fact that we love. The crew is in hibernation, frozen in suspended animation as it were. Suspended animation is theoretically possible however Arthur C Clarke’s use of it in the story and his projection that it might be applied to humans by the year 2001 is highly optimistic and as of this earth date, still only used successfully for short periods of time on small mammals and with mixed results.

One more quick science element Kubrick and Clarke use masterfully in this movie as a story telling device is the concept of space as a silent, vast void. Anyone growing up in a post Star Wars world probably thinks that if anything explodes in space all the aliens hear it. But they don’t. Not if they have ears like ours. When the explosive bolts go off in the 2001 movie you do not hear a thing until the airlock fills up with air. We begin to hear sound from the energy produced, as the chamber slowly fills with an atmosphere. Only then do the waves have a substance they can resonate off of, to produce vibrations that the ear can actually hear. GREAT STUFF and really dramatic.

The end of the movie is an exercise anyone can participate in who wants to theorize on the subject of quantum physics. In this new mathematical world, time and space exist only as a framework for possibility. They are a tool of the creative process but not a hard fast rule. So what does that mean if you are an artist with the mastery of Kubrick? It means break out the surrealism. Our human hero is invited in and becomes the guest of the aliens he was so earnestly and steadfastly motivated to pursue. The result is a more radicalized way of assimilating his experiential input. A place where each moment for him becomes is an end unto itself, as he perceives his old age, death and rebirth as a process in a universe of infinite processes..

MANUFACTURING GREY METAL USES MORE GREEN TECHNOLOGY

If you think that manufacturing looks like this it is time to take another look. Quantum POP found out at our recent visit to WESTEC, that in modern manufacturing, getting efficient means getting green.

Not too long ago manufacturing was a dirty business, but more and more the emphasis is on going green. In this article we are mostly talking about the cutting of parts and pieces used to make the stuff everyone wants and everyone uses and how in a growing number of manufacturing applications there is very little to no waste and pollution.

In the olden days, when smokestacks reached to the skies, there was a lot of waste in the process of cutting and routing and drilling of parts and pieces out of metal. Piles of scrap everywhere with oils and sludge running out of pipes that often went into the landfill or sewer or areas set aside around the manufacturing plant to dump pollutants. Today however more and more of this waste is either designed out of the manufacturing process or recycles and used over and over. The result is greener  and more efficient than even 10 years ago and is still improving.

Waste is a primary culprit when it comes to pollution. but today thanks to CNC which stands for computer numeric control manufacturing techniques, much of the scrap in metal processing is eliminated from the moment the designer puts a pencil to paper or in the case of our modern CAD, CNC applications mouse to screen.

Take sheet metal manufacturing for example. In the graphic above we see a piece of sheet metal which has been mapped out for cutting by a terrific new nesting program from our friends at Solidworks which as of this writing is the leading innovator in CAD, ( Computer Aided Design) software. There are several different sizes and shapes of parts ready to be cut out of this piece of sheet metal, and so perfectly are they mapped out here, that the edge of the  sheet metal is used to form many of the parts. The result is very little scrap metal waste from each piece of sheet metal used. If the parts represented are form different products they can be labeled by the machines during fabrication for easy cataloging and storage.

Today the remaining scrap metal can be recycled. Manufacturers may be doing a better job than consumers at this because it brings down the cost of production and is very practical in as much as most metal can be recycled without any loss of quality so there is always a buyer. Often the buyer is the manufacturer because the cost is competitive with metal freshly refined from ore. Also products that are made from recycled materials are often less expensive than products made from fresh materials.

One very toxic by-product of metal manufacturing in particular are the solvents and lubricants that are used to facilitate the meta part manufacturing. Solvents clean the parts and lubricants are used in the routing and drilling that is done using traditional metal or diamond bits. there is a lot of toxicity in the solvents and lubricants and the mess ends up in the cleaning bins or even the shop floor.

Separation Dynamics is doing something about that. They have this very green solution for filtering out the  oils and toxic solvents used in metal part manufacturing that is so efficient that the water that remains after the separation process can be used over again so water is not wasted and in the case of mop water  it even leaves the soap in it so you can mop the floor with it again and this process can be repeated over and over until the water evaporates. The solvents and lubricants separated out from this process can be recycled and re-used and that which is not reusable stored till the toxicity is no longer an ecological factor.

But wait it gets greener still. As it turns out there are a growing number of metal-cutting processes that do not require metal or diamond power cutting tools to manufacture state of the art, precision parts and pieces. In 1905 research started in the development of ceramic cutting tools and the technology is getting very good these days. these cutting tools use heat to cut through metal so there are no piles of curly metal scraps to clean up and there is no need to use lubricants to reduce friction.

***CLICK THE PICTURE TO WATCH VIDEO*** GREENLEAF MACHINING TOOLS, REQUIRE NO TOXIC ENVIRONMENTAL WASTE PRODUCING LUBRICANTS. THAT IS BECAUSE THEY ARE MADE FROM A CERAMIC MATERIAL. THIS IS A HIGH INTENSITY HEAT ABSORBING MATERIAL IT DOES NOT CUT THE STEEL WHICH RESULTS IN LEFT OVER METAL SCRAP. INSTEAD THE INTENSE HEAT ABSORBED BY THE FRICTION IN THE CONTACT OF THE CERAMIC WITH THE STEEL, MELTS THE STEEL PRODUCING A PRECISION EDGE. *CLICK THE PICTURE TO SEE THE VIDEO*

The Greenleaf Corporation is a pioneer in ceramics and is applying greener solutions to industrial applications all the time.

Last but not least in our Quantum POP overview of greener trends in manufacturing is the water jet technology. As you may have guessed, this technology uses water to cut precision parts. A thin high pressure stream of water to be exact. The water is mixed with an abrasive sand and cuts so precisely that it is becoming a standard method of parts manufacturing in the aero-space and medical industry where precision is the name of the game. No lubricant no scrap other than the left over metal that could not be used. the metal of course and also the water can all be recycled. The only drawback is the process is a bit slower than the other cutting methods already described here.

FLOW technology can cut with over 90,000 psi water pressure and ultra fine sandpaper sized grit. Waterjets cut a variety materials from food and paper, to ballistic materials and inconel.

That is because the water begins to freeze and turn into crystals as you reach 110,00 psi of pressure. But don’t worry they are working on it.

One more element in the green trend is the ability to take up much less space to accomplish the same amount of production. A small shop with several employees can now produce the same amount of goods with a few machines that once took dozens of machines and twice the space.

CO FOUNDER PETER DIAMANDIS "We are living during an age of maximum personal impact. Today, individuals and small teams can accomplish what only large corporations and governments could once do.

In what Tariq Malik, writing forSpace.com terms audacious in this article, Quantum POP believes is not so much audacious as it is awe-dacious. It is the result of reaching the inevitable conclusion, that we are running out of the resources to remain in the lifestyle of prosperity for all, to which we would like to become accustomed too. And, since we have the technology, why not just put a bunch of the money that was going to be invested anyway, on finding and developing the dwindling resources of earth, and put that money where the mother lode of all resources are. I don’t have to say it do I? You got it. That’s Right!

Sspaaaceeee.

ERIC ANDERSON FOUNDER OF SPACE ADVENTURES

This is where we want to be as a species the evidence would seem to indicate. On what do we base this? The world loves tech and the better standard of living it fosters and the fun it brings.. It is everywhere. all cultures and creeds. The more we make it, the more people want it and the more the world’s standard of living increases as a direct or indirect result of this tech toy working model of wealth creation. And what are we making this wealth creation stuff out of? Things that are disappearing on earth but are in great abundance out there in the heavens.

Billionaire software developer and Planetary Resources Inc. investor Charles Simonyi

It is instinctual, throughout all languages and cultures since the dawn of any historical record that when we seek God we look to the heavens. Are our very instincts so corrupted that even they are deceived? Then we should have never been. And if you believe that, then what are you doing here anyway. Go somewhere else and stop trying to slow down the fruits of evolution. Species evolve or die. It’s the law. And those that break the law must go to the house of pain.

filmmaker James Cameron

It is not that we all want to live in space or that even most of us do. It is that we can live anywhere.and we will improve the quality life on earth by doing so. If I were a person with skills, I wouldn’t mind living out in space for 9 mo or so doing a job making a bunch of money and then coming back to earth and hanging out. Fisherman and other trades have been doing this for years.

Quantum POP believes that as a matter of survival, if we do not leave the nest, this latest earth product of dominant species will go the way of the dinosaur and will be replaced with a new species which fulfills the earth spirit, mother gya whatever’s seeming desire to consciously connect in some way to the greater universe and embrace the creation from which it is made and from where we all come.

Eric E. Schmidt Google Executive Chairman

Space exploration and development is not arrogance. It is rather, an exercise in awe. The awe mankind inescapably feels when it comes face to face with the realization scientifically of its own puny tiny stature in a life of infinite proportions. Instead of fearing it, we must rejoice in the knowledge that in this universe, our creator has seen fit to give something as small as we, so much abundance. And all we have to do is what we love. This realization can only humble us and make us better able to accept it with gratitude. As we learn it, let us teach it and afford access to creation, to as many as possible, as soon as possible. To want more is to do more.

More awesome awedaciousness is certain to come.
